But that vision came after a pivotal moment in his life. After feeling led by God to move from Louisville, Kentucky, to Houston, Texas—a place he had been and a journey he had never taken—Cortrell stepped out in obedience.
He had never been on a plane at the time, but trusted the direction he felt he had been given.
That move became a season of stretching. Cortrell experienced major loss—his home in Kentucky, his vehicle, and a shift from nearly a six-figure income to working an hourly job in Texas.
Yet even in that season, he experienced provision in ways he can only describe as supernatural. Doors opened, needs were met, and he was sustained through faith when circumstances said otherwise.
During that time, Cortrell was reminded of Abraham’s obedience in Scripture—when God told him to “go” without revealing the full destination. That same principle of trust became the foundation of his journey.
While in Texas, his faith continued to deepen. One Sunday, Cortrell intended to attend his regular church, but was delayed by a train.
In that moment, he chose to look for a nearby church instead and discovered Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church. That decision became significant in his life, and he later experienced unexpected provision for his housing during that season.
While in Houston, Cortrell was consistently connected to the United Youth Ministry under the leadership of Prophet Victor K. Greaves—a community that provided consistent teaching, prayer, encouragement, and spiritual direction throughout his journey.
He is now honored to serve as a Kentucky Partner of the ministry, along with spearheading Purpose Pushers—a ministry built on pushing people into purpose, whether that be business, lifestyle, or spiritual growth.
It was in this season of obedience, humility, and dependence that the original vision for Velvera came to him.
“I truly believe Velvera is a product inspired by the Holy Spirit— that He is the true inventor, and I’ve simply been entrusted to steward the vision faithfully.”
That vision turned into months of design, refinement, and persistence—filing multiple patents and working with freelancers, designers, and manufacturers to bring Velvera to life.
Today, it stands as a modern dessert experience that blends warmth and elegance into one seamless piece.
In February 2026, Cortrell made his first national television appearance on the ABC Tamron Hall Show.
That opportunity came after a series of unexpected doors opened, including a viral moment online that led producers to reach out directly.
It was a reminder that faith and action go hand in hand.
His story is a testament to trusting God, moving with intention, and staying obedient even when the path isn’t fully clear.
Outside of Velvera, Cortrell enjoys spending time with family, his dog River, exploring real estate, and ministering the Word of God.
